Before Maradona arrived on the scene, Pele was considered to be the greatest footballer of all time. Born in Brazil in 1940 as Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele began playing professional football for Santos at age 15 and was called up for the national team at 16.

Pele’s international career sparkled and he won the World Cup with Brazil on three separate occasions. This makes Pele the only player to ever do so and he became Brazil’s current all-time leading goalscorer with 77 goals from 92 matches.
